Inclusive vs exclusive counting
Most date math excludes the end date: Monday to next Monday is 7 days, or exactly 1 week. Inclusive counting adds one day and is useful for event attendance or deadline windows where both start and end dates count.
Direct answer: weeks between two dates = calendar days ÷ 7. The most useful answer usually includes decimal weeks and full weeks plus leftover days: 45 days = 6.43 weeks = 6 full weeks and 3 days.
Work-week answer: count Monday–Friday weekdays first, then divide by 5. Use inclusive counting only when both the start date and end date should count.
| Need | Use this formula | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks between dates | calendar days ÷ 7 | Use the calculator below for decimal weeks, full weeks and leftover days. |
| Work weeks between dates | weekdays ÷ 5 | Count business days if weekends matter. |
| Weeks from today | days from today ÷ 7 | Calculate days from today. |
| Inclusive weeks | (calendar days + 1) ÷ 7 | Check date duration when both boundary dates count. |
| Question | Use this formula | Return this answer |
|---|---|---|
| How many weeks between two dates? | (end date - start date) ÷ 7 | Decimal weeks, full weeks, leftover days. |
| Should the end date count? | Add +1 day only for inclusive ranges. | State exclusive vs inclusive so the answer is not off by one day. |
| How many work weeks? | weekdays ÷ 5 | Work weeks before holidays or local closures. |
| Weeks from today or until a date? | Use today as the start date, then divide future days by 7. | Days left, decimal weeks, and full weeks left. |
| Weeks ago? | Reverse the range and use the absolute day span. | “21 days ago = 3 weeks ago.” |
Best practice: use the calculator below when the range crosses weekends, the boundary dates may be inclusive, or you need weekdays, weekend days, full weeks, leftover days, and a copyable explanation in one result.

| How many work weeks are between dates? | Weekdays ÷ 5 | Exclude Saturdays and Sundays first; holidays are not subtracted here. |

For snippets, tickets, planners, or classroom worksheets, use one clear sentence that includes the date span, decimal weeks, full weeks and leftover days:
Template: From [start date] to [end date] is [days] calendar days, or [decimal] weeks, which is [full weeks] full weeks and [leftover days] days.
Work-week template: The same span has about [weekdays] weekdays, or [weekday count ÷ 5] work weeks before subtracting holidays, PTO, or local non-working days.
| Search wording | Best phrasing | Internal next step |
|---|---|---|
| calculate weeks between dates | Decimal weeks plus full weeks and days. | Check exact days |
| calculate work weeks | Weekdays divided by 5, with a holiday caveat. | Count business days |
| weeks from a date | Add the week span to a known start date. | Add weeks to a date |
Use calendar weeks for elapsed time, pregnancy-style week counts, project deadlines and subscription windows. Use work weeks only after removing Saturdays and Sundays; subtract public holidays separately if your schedule depends on a country or employer calendar.
| Intent | Best count | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks from today until a deadline | Calendar weeks | Searchers usually want elapsed time between today and the target date. |
| Weeks between start and end dates at work | Work weeks | Weekends do not count toward staffing or payroll planning. |
| Weeks in a month or year | Reference conversion | Months vary from 4 weeks to 4 weeks + 3 days; years are 52 weeks plus 1 or 2 days. |
Use these preset spans to answer common searches without retyping dates. The calculator keeps the dates timezone-neutral and recalculates calendar weeks, weekdays and leftover days in the result box above.
